The city of Wageningen holds a special place in Dutch history, especially during the final days of the Second World War. The city’s ‘Vrijheidskwartier’ (Freedom Quarter), sought to tell Wageningen's story as a city of freedom. Not only in the past and present, but also in the future. Their ambition was to create an experience that allows visitors to feel the meaning of freedom in different contexts, sparking personal reflection and conversation.
To make visitors feel the essence of freedom, we had to go beyond a traditional format. The very notion of freedom is a mix of different perspectives and elements. This thinking led us to "Elements of Freedom". We took the thematic building blocks of freedom; the voices, experiences, memories and struggles and translated them into literal, physical elements that would move to add another dimension for the audience. Together, they would create a layered, immersive experience that blurs the line between film and performance.
The experience was brought to life within the cultural centre Visum Mundi. To transform its existing screening room into a dynamic space while preserving its function as a ‘traditional’ screening room, we collaborated with our technical partner Beam Brothers. Together, we designed and installed an intricate, modular projection system. All content, including archival footage, intimate portraits, spoken stories, sound design and animation, was meticulously crafted to move seamlessly across this unique setup.
